Celebrate Community: Service Day Sept 11Community service will take center stage the week of Sept. 8- 14 as local area Kiwanis, Lions, Optimist and Rotary clubs address cleaning the train station parking lots in Des Plaines during the service organizations’ fourth annual Celebrate Community initiative. On Wed Sept 11 at 530pm meet at the Des Plaines Library front entrance (1501 Ellinwood) and wear your Rotary tee shirt and join other volunteers to clean the train station parking lot. The event ends at 730pm and the volunteers may meet at AT7 Bar and Grill for a drink and fellowship! Pizza, Pitchers & Puzzles 2024Join us on Thursday, August 29, 2024 as we hold the 2nd Annual Pizzas, Pitchers & Puzzles club fundraiser. Thank you to our sponsors: Aaron Buehler (Pizza) and School Supts (Puzzles)! The event is being held at the Rob Roy Golf Course banquet room and starts at 6 pm with some social chatty time and welcome. The pizzas and pitchers will be served AND puzzles opened promptly at 6:15 pm. The event officially ends at 8:15 pm but everyone is welcome to hang around and continue to socialize....or finish their puzzle...or pizza...or pitcher.. the bar will still be open. YOUR team of FOUR will race to finish an 18" XL single topping (other than cheese) pizza, two pitchers of beer and/or soda and 300-piece puzzle. Prizes will be awarded. Higher Education ScholarshipsThe Rotary Club of River Cities has two $1500 scholarships to award to graduating seniors pursuing post-secondary education who are residents of Des Plaines, Mount Prospect or Prospect Heights. The award will be extended for an additional year as long as the student is enrolled full time and maintains a "B" average; total award potential is $3000. Raising Funds for Ukrainian humanitarian aidUPDATED 05.02.2022 River Cities has partnered with neighboring Rotary Clubs to raise funds for Ukraine for humanitarian aid funding and over $47,000 has been raised since the beginning of March for the Rotary Club of Kyiv International. These dollars have been spent on food, bandages, first aid kits, beds, mattresses, blankets, gasoline for hospitals and volunteers - hygiene items and food must be packed, delivered, transported and distributed.

Oh yea! Brian was happy that his landlord was indicted for bank fraud. Sounds cruel, but Brian is forced to switch offices to a new building after the landlord jacked up his rent by 250%. I guess the fraud wasn't that successful?

March 30, 2015 MeetingOur speakers (and guests) today were Tracey Crawford and Julie Clasen from the Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA). SRAs were established in Illinois in 1969. Of the 35 SRAs in Illinois, the NWSRA is the largest, bringing together 17 park districts to provide a full range of services to children and adults with disabilities.

January 5, 2015 MeetingOur speakers today were Kathi Grummel and Terry Younglove from the Northwest Community Hospital Foundation. The hospital is a 501c3 non-profit organization which is relatively rare for a hospital these days. It’s also independently operated, which is even more rare. The hospital’s status gives them the freedom to establish new services that might not initially be profitable.

November 17, 2014 MeetingOur speaker today was Julie Kane from Mount Prospect's Human Services Department. Julie supervises a staff of ten people (including an intern) and they are all busy, all the time. The department offers a range of services, but they focus mainly on nursing and social services.

November 3, 2014 MeetingOur speaker today was Rod McKenzie of Higher Up Ministries. Rod and his wife Jan have been working with youth in the area since 1986. Their ministry grew to the point where they felt the need to work with the entire community rather than keeping their focus on young adults (though that is still a major facet of their work).

October 27, 2015 MeetingTom Zander was our speaker. Tom and his wife own Picket Fence Realty. Tom has over 25 years’ experience in real estate and spoke to us about how the Great Recession impacted home prices and whether the next few years will bring a rebound.

October 20, 2014 meetingOur speaker today was Phil Zaleski from the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance. The Alliance, though not well known has had a major impact on Illinois. Chief among them, they were instrumental in passing the legislation mandating smoke detectors in all buildings. Their daily focus is to raise awareness of and education about fire safety. They have pamphlets, classes, camps and conferences for people of all ages addressing any possible topic.

October 6, 2014 MeetingOur speaker today was Bill Durkin, a motivational speaker and author of Strive to Survive Today. Bill talked about how people fail to thrive in today’s world, despite having an incredible range of advantages that previous generations couldn’t dream of. He cited a lack of positivity as the principle cause. |
September 22, 2014 MeetingAlice Bisanz Johnson was our speaker. Alice is the School Liaison Librarian at the Prospect Heights Public Library as well as the Library’s volunteer coordinator. The Library’s motto for its volunteers “You’re needed, You’re Wanted, You’re Welcomed” really shines through when you look at the statistics.

September 15, 2014 MeetingWe were happy and proud to host Ellen Young, our District Governor today! Ellen is a member of the Lincolnshire Morning Star Club and she shared with us how her small club was able to marshal the full resources of Rotary to establish two computer labs in the Dominican Republic. The initiative for the project came from Ellen’s daughter who saw the need first hand while doing volunteer work. It was inspiring to hear how quickly and efficiently Rotary can dedicate funds at the the point of need.

September 8, 2014 MeetingToday’s speakers were Nancy Filatre and Ann Marie Thomas from the Prospect Heights Library. They were on hand to talk about September being National Library Card Signup Month. They also brought a sample of the myriad of items that can be checked out from the library – beyond just books! They had games and puzzles for kids, movies for adults, and all sorts of electronic devices for people of all ages. The club seemed particularly interested in a device called the Watt Detective that patrons can borrow to help them find and eliminate wasted electricity. |

Meeting August 18, 2014Chris Schoenherr was our speaker again today. Chris visited us back in March to talk about the Prospect Heights Public Library’s 3D printer. Today, Chris talked about two services designed for patrons on the go.

Meeting July 28, 2014We had a guest visiting from Bulgaria today. Georgi Buchkov is visiting his daughter, but is also planning a permanent move to Mount Prospect himself. He has visited us before and we were very happy to see him again.
The Club presented $300.00 to the Prospect Heights Park District
This was also the first week where we have our monthly board meetings at our weekly meetings. As a result we didn’t have an outside speaker. Also as a result, attendance at the board meeting reached a record high!
